"They were trying to find a hospital and dropped him off" at Alaris Health at 96 Parkway instead, one responder said.
The victim -- identified as Riquelvin Burgos-Nunez, 24, of the Bronx -- apparently had been shot through a car door on East 31st Street between 11th and 12th avenues around 9 p.m., authorities said.
"He continued driving until he crashed into another vehicle and came to a stop in the area 749 Broadway," Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald said in a joint release.
Two friends "placed him into another vehicle and transported him" to Alaris, where he was pronounced dead, they said.
Police were searching for the shooter, who apparently fled in a red Honda.
